The history of Camping Car Hire

When Andy and Angelika Rechter started Camping Car Hire in 1992, they had no idea that it would blossom into the thriving business it is today.

Like many people out there, they started out small. Equipped then with a fleet of well prepared second hand vehicles, plenty of perseverance and a firm belief in customer service, they set out to provide the service that clients wanted. From those small beginnings they have seen Camping Car Hire grow from strength to strength.

In those days Andy and his wife operated Camping Car Hire from Edison Street in Windhoek. Even then the signs of success were there. Soon Andy's younger brother, Frank, joined the company as manager. Since then this family business has built up a fleet of over 100 new vehicles ranging from Mazda's, Microbusses, Ventures to a variety of Single Cab Nissan and Mazda 4x4's. The company presently employs more than 20 people including amongst others mechanics, drivers, vehicle cleaners and administrative staff.

The need to accommodate the growing staff complement, additional vehicles and volume of business saw Camping Car Hire move to larger premises in December 1996 at 36 Joule Street in Windhoek's Southern Industrial Area.

The new set-up includes a modern reception area, huge workshop and service area, enclosed parking facilities, a spares department, separate tyre and camping equipment storage facilities as well as a car wash-bay.

With a total of four mechanics and workshop assistants the company's fleet of vehicles are kept in tip-top condition. Each vehicle is subject to a thorough check by the workshop foreman before a client drives away to ensure a trouble-free trip.

In the unlikely event of a breakdown, Camping Car Hire provides a 24-hour back-up service to all its clients on the road, no matter where they are traveling at the time. Camping Car Hire has established contact with a network of workshops and mechanics throughout Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe who are on standby to assist Camping Car Hire clients in case of a breakdown. Should the problem be too serious, take too long or parts be unavailable, Camping Car Hire will replace the vehicle with an equivalent without delay.

Since many overseas visitors, while experienced drivers, are unfamiliar with Namibia s road conditions and terrain, the Camping Car Hire management takes a short test drive with clients across some rugged 4x4 terrain near Windhoek to prepare them adequately for what lies ahead. Each client leaves the Camping Car Hire premises equipped not only with the correct vehicle and tyres for the journey, but also invaluable travel hints, a second spare wheel and the knowledge that should the worst happen, emergency medical evacuation is on hand from Medrescue. In addition, all 4x4 s are equipped with a second battery.

The camping equipment, which can be hired as an optional extra, is packed for the client on request. Here again, you are equipped suitably for whichever area you may be travelling to. The list of equipment provided by Camping Car Hire is extensive and covers everything from a sleeping bag to a 12-Volt refrigerator. Click here for more details.
